AI Process Automation That Handles the Exceptions

Most automation breaks on the 10% it has not seen before. We put a reasoning step where that happens, keep the rest deterministic, and run the whole pipeline inside your VPC.

What is AI process automation?

The Answer

AI process automation is workflow automation with a reasoning step inside the pipeline. Classical automation replays a fixed sequence and halts on anything it has not seen; AI process automation reads the unstructured input, decides which branch applies, and escalates only what it genuinely cannot resolve. The deterministic steps either side stay deterministic, which is what keeps it auditable.

What you get

Four outcomes we commit to before we start.

01

The exception queue stops growing

The 10% of runs that fall out to a human are what cap the ROI of classical automation. A reasoning step reads the unstructured case, applies your rules, and routes it: only genuine ambiguity reaches a person, with the context already assembled.

02

Runs in your VPC, not a vendor console

A self-hosted n8n instance inside your AWS or Azure account, using your existing IAM, secrets and observability. Data never leaves your boundary, and every execution is logged and replayable. No admin-panel drift between what is deployed and what is in source control.

03

Grounded in your systems, not the open web

LLM steps call your knowledge graph, your retrieval endpoint or your own model, so a decision inside the pipeline is traceable to a record you own. That is the difference between automation your auditors accept and a black box they block.

04

Built by people who have hit the limits

Hundreds of n8n pipelines in production. We know where the platform bends: queue mode under load, custom nodes when the catalogue runs out, and the retry semantics that decide whether a failed run is recoverable or silently lost.

The Guaranteed Production Pilot

Fixed scope · Written target

One customer graph powering AI Process Automation across every location.

AI Process Automation running on a single unified customer graph: personalization, recommendations, and reporting that finally agree with each other, driving measurable AOV lift.

Speed

Intelligence audit in week one. First measurable lift inside the pilot window.

Zero effort

Fully managed. We unify the data, build the system, and wire it into your existing stack: your team just watches the numbers move.

Risk reversal

We agree the lift target up front. Don't see measurable movement in the pilot window and we keep working (free) until you do.

The same thing, four names

RPA, hyperautomation, IDP, STP: how these relate.

Buyers reach this page under at least four different labels. An operations lead says RPA, a CIO says hyperautomation, a finance team says straight-through processing, a vendor deck says IDP. They are not synonyms, and the differences decide what you should actually buy.

AI process automation
Workflow automation with a reasoning step inside the pipeline. The deterministic majority of a process runs as it always did; a model handles the unstructured or ambiguous cases that previously fell out to a person.
Robotic process automation (RPA)
Software that replays a recorded sequence of user-interface actions. Fast to stand up and genuinely effective on stable, high-volume screens, but it halts on anything it has not seen, which is why exception queues grow underneath it.
Hyperautomation
An analyst term for combining RPA, process mining, orchestration and AI into one programme rather than buying them separately. Useful as a budget framing; it describes a portfolio, not a technology you install.
Intelligent document processing (IDP)
Extracting structured fields from unstructured documents - invoices, claims, contracts - using OCR plus a model. Usually the first reasoning step inserted into an otherwise deterministic pipeline.
Straight-through processing (STP)
The share of cases that complete end to end with no human touch. The number worth tracking, because it moves only when exceptions are handled rather than when more happy-path steps are automated.
Exception queue
Where a pipeline sends what it cannot process. The queue, not the automation rate, is what caps return on a programme: every item in it is a case the system was built to avoid handling.
Human in the loop
A required approval step before an action executes, usually bounded by a threshold such as value, confidence or risk tier. The control that makes an automated decision defensible after the fact.
Orchestration layer
The component that sequences steps, routes branches, retries failures and holds state across systems. Distinct from the model: the model decides, the orchestrator executes and records.
Idempotency
The property that re-running a step produces the same result rather than a duplicate. What decides whether a failed run can be safely retried or has to be unpicked by hand.
Business process management (BPM)
The discipline of modelling, measuring and improving a process, and the suite of tools built around it. BPM describes the process; automation executes it. Mature BPM modelling makes automation scoping far quicker.

Service FAQ

People also ask about ai process automation.

AI process automation puts a reasoning step inside the workflow. Classical RPA replays a fixed sequence of clicks and breaks the moment a form moves or an exception appears. AI process automation lets the pipeline read an unstructured document, decide which branch applies, and escalate what it cannot resolve, while the deterministic steps either side stay deterministic. We build it on n8n so the orchestration is inspectable and self-hostable rather than locked inside a vendor console.
