The Challenge
In music today, unreleased productions get stuck on hard drives. A songwriter with a hit sitting in their catalog usually has to route it through managers, publishers, and A&Rs before it reaches an artist who could actually cut it — and along the way the writer gives up rights, percentages, and often the specific artist they had in mind. Meanwhile artists and A&Rs searching for the right production have no way to see what exists outside their personal network. Gateless was built by a publishing A&R who lived that problem directly, and set out to remove every gatekeeper between an unreleased production and the person who could make it a hit.
What We Built
Agentic Giants engineered the full Gateless platform — a custom Next.js application powering a rights-protected, multi-role marketplace where music professionals connect and transact directly. Not a redesigned Shopify template, not a no-code stitch of off-the-shelf tools: a purpose-built platform engineered for the trust, permissions, and rights-handling that a marketplace for unreleased music actually requires.
- Direct-connection marketplace: Artists, indie labels, and A&Rs browse a rights-protected database of unreleased productions from verified songwriters and connect directly — no managers, contracts, or middlemen in the path.
- Five-tier role-aware platform with a free-plan on-ramp: One product, five distinct user journeys: Independent Artist, Signed Artist, Songwriter, A&R, and Executive Services — each with its own onboarding, feature set, permissions, and pricing tier. Monetization ladder runs from a free-plan entry point through Indie Pro at $50/mo up to Executive Services, so the same platform captures a curious signed-up creator on day one and a full-scope executive engagement on the same rails.
- AI-powered music organization: Automatic categorization and tagging of uploaded productions so a searchable catalog scales without manual curation — the discovery layer that makes the marketplace usable at platform size.
- Built-in ledger tracking: Every view, consideration, and download of a production is logged transparently — the songwriter sees exactly who engaged with their work in real time, which is the trust foundation the whole marketplace runs on.
- Doverunner IP protection integration: Rights protection wired in via Doverunner so unreleased material stays legally defensible from upload through connection to negotiated use — the objection every songwriter raises before uploading unreleased catalog anywhere.
- Full-stack music-executive network: Not just A&Rs. The platform routes into seven distinct executive roles inside the music-industry commercial stack: creative-side (A&Rs), audience-side (publicists, marketers, promotion experts), and specialist-side (lawyers, royalty specialists, music merchandisers). One connection can chain the whole go-to-market path — the marketplace becomes a workflow, not a listing site.
- Nine-question FAQ + role-native support surfaces: Public-facing FAQ covers nine buyer objections end to end — connection-fee rights, cancellation policy, why-pay-if-not-guaranteed, preview access, comparison against alternative platforms — plus in-app support routing scoped to each of the five roles. Every objection an artist or songwriter typically raises in the first sign-up flow has a documented answer waiting.
- Global platform, 50+ countries: Built to scale across jurisdictions from day one — the songwriter, artist, and executive network already spans 50+ countries, which is the reach that makes the direct-connection model economically viable versus a regional agency.
Three workflows, one platform
A multi-sided marketplace only works when every side has a coherent journey through it. Gateless ships three role-native workflows on the same underlying platform — each with its own onboarding, entitlements, and success surface, but all reading from the same rights-protected catalog and ledger.
Songwriters
Monetize an unreleased catalog
- 1Upload unreleased productions to the rights-protected database
- 2Track every view, consideration, and download in real time
- 3Earn on connection fees while retaining full ownership and creative control
Independent Artists
Find production without a label
- 1Browse verified unreleased productions with previews and analytics
- 2Pay a transparent connection fee to reach the songwriter directly
- 3Negotiate terms, download, and produce — no manager in the chain
A&Rs and Executives
Discover the next hit before release
- 1Search the curated catalog by role-scoped filters and AI-tagged attributes
- 2Read ledger signals — who else considered a production and when
- 3Connect directly with verified writers and route into the executive network
Why it’s a specialist build, not a template
Marketplaces for creative rights fail differently than marketplaces for physical goods. A stolen SKU can be refunded; a leaked unreleased song cannot. Gateless required three things a generic marketplace stack does not deliver out-of-the-box: rights protection wired through every listing (delivered via Doverunner integration), immutable per-view ledger tracking so writers can trust who has heard what, and a five-role permission model so an Executive sees a different product than an Indie Artist without either of them noticing the seams. Building that on Shopify or a no-code platform would have compromised at least one of the three; the custom Next.js build was the point.
We build the same class of custom production platforms for other product teams that outgrow off-the-shelf tools.
