Do we have to replace our core banking system to modernize?

No: and in most cases you shouldn't try. Full core replacements are multi year programs with high failure rates and heavy regulatory exposure. An overlay pattern keeps the existing core as the ledger of record and layers new rails, APIs, and experiences on top, giving you the modernization outcomes in months rather than years. Core replacement, when it makes sense, can then follow as a lower risk strangler fig migration.

What legacy core systems do you integrate with?

The integration pattern is core agnostic. We build against the major cores (FIS, Fiserv, Jack Henry (SilverLake, Symitar), Temenos) through their supported integration surfaces, and against custom / in house cores through whatever service bus or messaging layer they expose. Each core has its own idioms; the overlay abstracts them so the modernization program isn't held hostage to a specific vendor's roadmap.

How long does a core banking modernization project take?

Overlay pattern modernization typically ships a first user visible capability in 3 to 4 months (e.g. real time payments live, an internal API surface exposed) with a full program running 12 to 18 months. Full core replacements are 3 to 5+ year programs and outside the scope of what we recommend for most institutions.

How does this affect our regulatory posture?

Because the core stays as the ledger of record, the fundamental regulatory posture (capital, deposit insurance, examinations) doesn't change. What changes is the operational surface: the new rails, APIs, and compliance overlay each need their own controls, evidence, and examination trail.
