The short answer

What is a card issuing platform?

A card issuing platform lets a fintech, marketplace, or corporate issue payment cards (virtual or physical) under its own brand. It sits between a sponsor bank (which holds the BIN and the regulatory relationship) and the card networks (Visa, Mastercard), providing card creation, real time authorization, spend controls, statements, and program management. Modern issuing platforms let a product team ship a card program in weeks: cards created on demand, with spend rules enforced at the moment of authorization.

FAQ

Card Issuing & Program Management: frequently asked questions.

How is card issuing different from card acquiring?

Acquiring is the merchant side (accepting card payments. Issuing is the consumer/business side) putting cards in customers' hands so they can spend. Different regulatory relationships (issuing needs a sponsor bank BIN), different economics, different technology stack.

How long does a card program take to launch?

With sponsor bank + BIN in place, a virtual card MVP typically ships in 6 to 10 weeks. Physical card programs add fulfillment lead time. Ongoing card programs run as a continuous product: new controls, new card types, and network updates rolled in without a restart.

Do you need a sponsor bank, or can we use yours?

You'll need a BIN sponsor bank; we work with yours or introduce you to sponsor banks we've integrated with. The platform is written to be BIN agnostic: sponsor bank relationships change over time and your card program should survive that change.

What spend controls are supported?

Per card limits, per user limits, MCC (merchant category) allow/block, geography rules, single use / one time token cards, expiration and time of day windows, and custom rules wired to your risk engine. All enforced at authorization time.
